Telecoms start-up programme
National Grid and Energis - a new trunk telecoms provider
This programme involved the start-up of a new telecoms business for the
National Grid. Initially named Telecom Electric, it was re-branded Energis and provides
trunk bandwidth via fibre optic cables on the power transmission network. The programme involved
defining the business strategy,
implementing capital controls, developing
a technical solution, recruiting the workforce and negotiating
wayleaves and property rights.
Energis became a "darling of the stock-market" and briefly had a market capitalisation greater than that
of its owner the National Grid Company. It has supported the growth and development of the internet in the UK by
provided much of the necessary bandwidth.
